Jalagandeeswarar Temple stays in the womb of Vellore Fort, which by itself is a fine place to visit. It has the mythological back ground of history underneath and a great working story cultivating
the trust of people even today. The place has great sculptures encarved from stone and which depict the live spirit of the god within. And at times even marriages can be well organized in front of the temple gathering the benedictions of the god one believes in.

Murugan Temple - Yelagiri

Velavan temple was constructed in the memory of Lord Murugan and is located on the tip of the mountains of yelagiri. It is a best view point to have a look at the wonderful large plains lying
beneath from the top of the mountain. The temple bells ringing on the top of the mountain helps keep life going and maintains the essence of culture live upright even these days.
All festivals celebrated in Tamil Nadu are celebrated with great pomp and luxury in velavan temple and the best time to visit this temple stays to be in the month of July or August when there are frequent festivals celebrated one after the other.
Swami malai hills are the hills in the form of cake with a strong base at the bottom and high peak of the hills just tend to touch the sky. The highest of its peak is about 4338 meters from the ground level and people love climbing the great heights at a stretch.
There are several other peaks in the neighbourhood like Javadi hills, Pallamathi hills and the like which are easier to climb and thereby enjoy the beauty of the nature from a distance. Climbing does consume time, so if one starts climbing the mountain early in the morning then one can enjoy the beauty of the mountain all day long with all the different climatic conditions troughout the day.

Yelagiri Hills

Yelagiri hills, is an idyllic place for a short holiday. Green hills and picture postcard scenery greets you here. It is called the queen of hill stations and is the most pristine and unpolluted among the
hill stations in Tamil Nadu. Yelagiri Hills is a backward area with few glaring developments like cottages and farm houses, yet a place that has maintained its 'remote' label. The government is trying to promote Yelagiri as a tourist place. But now, apart from the lake, there is not much for the regular tourist. But the view in and around the hills is captivating enough to last a lifetime. Jalagamparai water falls is a 5 Km trek from Yelagiri downhill. Its a tough trek, but the view from the sides of the mountain, of the valley, is truly rewarding. The Javad range of hills run parallel to Yelagiri; the land is sandwiched between these two. The towns in Yelagiri hills are Athnavur and Nilavur. Athnavur is the best place to stay and plan your trip. Some good quality cottages and hotels are available here. Also, this is the last stop with traces of modernisation. The next town (a settlement rather) is Nilavur. Here the place is full of agricultural land and vegetable and rose farms. It will be an interesting detour to visit these farms. The people here are friendly. The Yelagiri hills is a range of mountains approximately 250 Km from Chennai on the ChennaiBangalore route. Taking advantage of the three day weekend and to have some respite from the blistering heat in Chennai, we decided to try out the hill station. Tirupattur is a crowded, dusty town with a really dirty bus stand. The ride up the Yelagiri hills took a leisurely 2 hours. The route has 14 hairpin bends and the nighttime view of the surrounding towns during the climb is breathtakingly beautiful. Yelagiri is a small hamlet with a single main road and a few scattered houses. However, holiday resorts abound and maybe even outnumber the resident houses. There is a small lake in which boating is allowed. A few kilometer from the town center is a trekking location called Swamimalai (No, do not mistake it for its takes about an hour and a half to climb to the top of Swamimalai through the dense jungle cover, but its worth the effort the view from the top is exhilarating. Apart from the lake and the trek, there's very little to do in Yelagiri. It seems to have become a favorite weekend resort for people from Bangalore, given its proximity almost all rooms are booked on weekends people land up in cars with family /friends. The weather is pretty chill even in mid summer and is a good place to beat the heat.

Jalagamparai Falls(44 Km from Yelagiri)

Jalagamparai waterfalls stay to be in the valley region downhill and are at little distance away from the Yelagiri. It's a beautiful place to be there and the experience is worth remembering.
Waterfall's view is best in the days of November to February as they are fully loaded with water but the waterfall is little dry in the times of summers.
These days the flow of water in the waterfall is considerably reduced as compared to recent past years, but still its scenic beauty has always been appreciated and liked by most of the tourists visiting the place and they have a great time there.
The River Attaaru, runs through the valleys of Yelagiri Hills, and at the village of Jadaiyanoor, flows over to form the waterfall. It's perhaps the only distant spot from the main town (over 30 kilometre) and fairly frequented by visitors to the Hills. This could either be reached from Tirupattur (15 Km) or by an hour's trek from the hills. Adjacent to the Jalagambari falls, there is a Murugan temple located within a building constructed in the shape of a Lingam.
Jalagamparai Waterfalls is also an ideal place to go on a day long trek and if you do decide to go there, just make sure you're well stocked with water and food. The waterfalls are dependent on the river being full and the river is dependent on substantial rainfall. Yelagiri Hills hasn't any monsoon season of its own; rainfall here is mainly a 'spillover' of rainfall in nearby Bangalore or Chennai regions. Yelagiri Hills can largely be dry.
A lovely waterfall about an hour's trek from Yelagiri has been created by the Attaru River, which flows through the Yelagiri hills. It's a very attractive spots for loving couples. The Government Silk Farm is famous for its mulberry plantations. The sericulture tour can provide you immense pleasure as you get a chance to see silk farm from very close.

Swamimalai Temple

Swamimalai is fourth among the six padai Veedu or sacred shrines built to offer reverence to Lord Murugan. The presiding deity here expounded the inference of the Pranava mantra OM to his own
Father Lord Siva Himself.

The saint Bhrugu before begining an arduous Mythology says that saint Bhrugu before commencing an arduous tavam or penance, got the blessing that anybody disturbing his mediation will forget all his knowledge. Such was the power of the penance that the holy fire emanating from the head of the saint reached up to the heavens, and the frightened devas surrendered to Lord Siva praying for his grace. The Lord extinguished the sacred fire by covering the saint's head by hand. With the saint's penance thus disturbed the Lord became oblivious of all his knowledge and is said to have regained them by learning the Pranava mantra from Lord Murugan at this shrine.

Once when Brahma, the lord of all creations was proceeding to Kailasa, the ever playful child Lord Murugan asked him for the meaning of the Pranava OM.

Swamimalai Temple is one of the six renowned abodes of Lord Subramanya. The temple is built on an artificial hill and is approached by a flight of steps. The presiding deity is worshipped as Swaminathan. The temple has three 'gopuram' with three 'praharam'. The 'gopuram' on the south side of the temple is decorated with statues and contains five storeys while the other two entrances have no towers above them. Swamimalai is a sylvan village, located about 5 Km west of Kumbakonam on the banks of a tributary of river Cauvery. The temple is situated in close proximity to the bus stand and the railway station is about 2 Km away. It is well connected to and circumscribed by important places like Kumbakonam, Tiruvidaimarutur, Mayiladuthurai, Papanasam, Thanjavur etc.

Swamimalai Temple Pujas and Festivals
Daily Pujas to the deities are performed six times a day (six kalams). Usha Kalam, Kalasandhi and Uchikala poojas are performed in the forenoon and the afternoon poojas begining from Sayaratchai and Rendam kalam are concluded with Arthajama poojas in the night.
